Mr. Newell is Chairman and CEO of Roberto Newell y Cia, S.A. de C.V., a consulting firm specializing in projects with high complexity and impact. Between 2003 and 2011, he was founding Director General of the Instituto Mexicano para la Competitividad (Mexican Institute for Competitiveness, IMCO), where he is currently Vice President. He was Undersecretary for Agribuisness at SAGARPA, the Mexican Agriculture Ministry, and Director General of FEESA, the state-owned sugar mills. Between 1984 and 2001, he worked for McKinsey & Co. Inc., from the Mexico City, Dallas and Miami offices. For five years, he led McKinsey’s presence in the Caribbean and Central America.
He is a member of the Boards of various institutions, among them: Smurfit Kappa Group; Walmart de México; Cia. Mexicana de Inversiones de Capital (a subsidiary of NAFIN, the Mexican development bank); the Principal Financial Group (Mexico); and is Chairman of the Board of Finterra, S.A. (a financial institution specialized in loans to agribusiness). He also chairs the Strategy Committee of the Board of Trustees of Mexico City’s Centro Médico ABC.
He studied Business Administration at Universidad de las Américas and holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Texas at Austin.
